ABOUT MUSIC FOR THE AGES

Girl Scout Project Turned Nonprofit

Every morning, I used walk by the retirement home across the street from my high school. There were always seniors milling about the home, and kids like me passing by on their way to class. One day I became painfully aware that these groups never mixed.

I had always been aware of the disconnect between different generations. Finger pointing, misunderstandings, and simply lack of interaction---I figured it was just a fact of life. Someone would probably come along and fix it at some point. But something changed that day. At sixteen years old, I racked my brain for a solution, and something came to me: everyone loves music. Everyone can relate to that.

I have been a musician for twelve years. I have been a Girl Scout for that same time. Suddenly, I realized that I had to be that someone.

After months of tedious work, I emerged with a plan for my Girl Scout Gold Award, where I would bring youth music students to perform at the senior center. We focused on fostering connections by explaining the significance of our pieces to our lives, talking to seniors and, most importantly, playing music.

The project was a massive success, but it eventually had to end. Overjoyed with the effects of my program, I was unwilling to let this happen. So I joined two of my core volunteers for the project, Zoe and Allison Primosch, to create this nonprofit. Today, we still continue to spread joy and understanding between generations through our musical performances.
